Hi there everyone,

I was thinking about installing speakers on the outside of my PU and I was wondering if anyone has done this or not.  1st question I have is if you have done this did you go with indoor outdoor speakers or marine speakers.  2nd question is how and were did you mount them. I was thinking of getting marine speakers and putting them into the side of the PU like the newer PU are.  Or do I get the other ones and then I can put them just about anywhere.  Any input or suggestion would be great on this.  This is my great debate.   :( Thanks

Thanks,

We put our speakers on the inside of our house and the inside of our tow vehicle........that way we are less apt to disturb others with "Our" music  :sombraro: and we don't need to buy special, weather-proof (bullet proof :p ) speakers..

I put speakers in the popup and a set of jacks on the outside under a weather tight cover to plug a portable set of speakers into for outside. I have found that I did not need the jack for the outside speakers because the inside ones can be turned up more than enough to hear outside the popup.

When we go camping we only want to hear the sounds of nature!  There's no need for speakers on the outside of a pup...IMO :swear:

One of the pleasures of camping is enjoying I silence and sounds of nature,We all live everyday with the hussle and bussel of noise, and live to get away for peace and quiet....use your inside speakers,or portable stereo outside at moderate level,as to not distrub"our peace and quiet"...Remember camping is a get away from everyday life, not take it with us......Thank you....

Don't mean to sound curmudgeonly, but I have to concur that turning your PUP into a big boom-box is not going to endear you to your camping neighbors, assuming you camp in areas where others are nearby.

If you are camping somewhere that such considerations are not an issue, go with the best quality self contained and weather proof speakers you can get.  Marine are sometimes better sealed, but often have poorer audio performance (due to cone material) if that matters to you.  I would not mount them in the side of the camper to prevent water infiltration.  Perhaps you can hang them from the lift poles or off of the latch brakets on the hard top?

Our trailer came with both inside and outside speakers. You can use the "Fader" control on the stereo to balance the volume inside to out. That said, whether or not the outside speakers get used depends upon where we are camping.

In a national forest CG or other more rustic setting....no way. It's doubtful the stereo even gets turned on. For one thing, in this kind of setting the thought of playing music never occurs. For another, using a stereo in these CGs would just be another battery draw.

Several times a year we camp in the large developed campgrounds, basically a site that is twice as wide as the trailer, fenced in on both sides. (We call these "Parking Lot CGs"). We almost always encounter a "neighbor" that wants to share their "music" with everyone else in the CG. We've used the outside speakers in these places, but I make an effort to adjust the volume so that the music cannot be heard outside our site. I don't know that I am always successful, but I have asked my neighbors if the music is too loud, or to let me know if it is disturbing them.

On a PUP, I'd look at wiring a speaker jack into a waterproof box. Then, when camping at a CG where outside speaker use would not be an issue, bring the speakers along. When you don't need them, you don't have to carry them.

Couple of points to consider.

1. The closer the speakers are to where you want to hear them the lower the volume can be and the less likely the sound will travel.

2. Standard outdoor speakers will be fine, they only need to be weather resistant/proof if they're going to get wet. Marine speaker will cost more since they are always in a harsh environment.

What I did was run the wires to the cabinet and seat areas at either end of the camper and terminated them with dual banana plugs. The wires can easily slip out under the bunk cover for outside use, and back in if we want music inside. The plug makes it easy to connect. Just strap the speakers to the lift post or awning poles, set on the cooler or such and you're good to go.

And of course always be courteous of others.

Thanks everyone for replying.  My intent was not to bother the other campers that were next to me but to have the camper speakers outside so that I didn't have to have the inside speakers up so loud when I was outside next to the PU.  That does bother me also about people have loud music at thier sites.   :( Thanks for helping.

I have marine speakers on the outside. Factory installed. Like the previous posting, we use the fade function to go from indoor/outdoor. We have an AUX jack too, so that we can even watch movies off the laptop. Sometimes we have surrounding campsites watching the movies with us. With that said, placing the speakers on the side of the camper about 5 feet apart makes perfect sense for me. Just (as I am sure you would be) be kind to your neighbors. Take a walk around and make sure you stereo is not too loud. There is even weather resistant remotes that can be installed outside. Also marine grade. They will allow you to adjust the volume and such. We have a little IR remote that  works well inside, but poorly from outside. Nothing like some oldies on a Friday night around the campfire with the family! We are able to enjoy nature and music equally. Just be respectful.
