Anyone know anything about Linux Web Servers and MySQL

I'm sure many of you noticed the server issues lately. I'm looking for anyone that can give me a little advice on linux web servers. I'm running on a dedicated server. I have set the mySQL connections higher but after a certain point it did not seen to help. One of the tech support guys at the hosting company suggested I may need to have more ram which is at 1024 now saying I keep going to the swap drive for more memory which slows down the server. I asked about another server which has 2048MB of Ram. I'm trying to figure out if this will make a big difference. My other alternative would be to add a second dedicated server like the first aned put PUT stff on it. The upgraded server would be cheaper but the second server  has an added benefit of being up when the other is down so at least I should not have every thing drop out at the same time.

Anyone know anything about this stuff?

I'm certainly no computer expert but I can tell you this. I have 1G of RAM on each of my 3 computers and that is just adequate for surfing the net. It just seems logical that one may need at least 2 -3X that much RAM for a computer to act as a server. I may be showing my ignorance on the subject but in todays environment, it seems that RAM is king and 3G seems to be more common place.

my options appear to be either 1024 or 2048 beyond that there it's out I don't think I could afford it.

I vote for a second server for the reasons already stated :o

These are actually pre configured servers, I've never seen it real life, I just talk to it from my compter. I would not really be upgrading the server but upgrading to a different server. They will also give me more badwidth and hard drive space.

SEEEE!!!! I told you that I would be showing my ignorance.....:p

There have been a few times when PUX by itself could bust through the available connections so this is one reason why the single server solution seems more workable to me, from a post on pux mysql with 4gb will max out at 1024 connections, I'm thining we need minium 200 and as much as 300 occasionally so hopefully 2GB of ram helps out.

hang in there..I'm sure you will find a good solution soon...(We all know It's better to be a camper than a marshmallow..;):J  ) I have faith and apparently more patience than others

I live with a computer programmer I hear the complaints all the time

That'd be me.......:sombraro:

Which brings up the question.........what happened to the "Search" on this site. I can't find anything on it.

I tried doing a search for "Joshua tree" because someone asked me about that rally. That rally was just this March and it doesn't show up......

I wold have loved to go to joshua tree myself. As soon as we get our house sold we are planning to move to your neck of the woods.

I didn't know there was an issue with the search, If I ever get through these other issues I can look into it. Is the search different than before I upgraded the search feature.

Another thing you can try is go on google and type in the search box:
joshua tree site:areveeclub.com

This should give you only results from Arvee Club.

Thanks.....that worked..:-()

However, when I type "Joshua tree" into the PUT search, I get nothing...

You'll have to join our SCCAMPERS rallies when you get in town... We'd love to have you.

Dean, Remeber..your server is only as good as the service providing your connection, If there maxed your maxed. Yes more memory helps you for access to the web site.Large pictures takes alot of BW so can you have the site limit this. ????

Dean, I'm mostly a hardware person, but Unix can be fun...I'll try and help a little, I have friends that say they dont know s++t and have been in the industry for for 25+ years. But for some reason you talk and things just get figured out. ( thats why they charge 300.00 PH ):D

My server uses the plesk control panel, there is a little graph that shows my memory usage. When I can refresh that page during those times the server appears to be busy I can see that the bar is almost full. I figure that is not a good sign. I had increased the connections up to 250 and we were still having troubles. I was able to telnet in and see the used connections were less than 160 so I backed the available connections down to 175. So far I've not seen any used connections up to 175, but I have seen it as high as 268.

At least one of the tech support guys was telling me that he thinks things are slow due to not enough available ram. I did order an upgraded server so hopefully that will take are of the problem. Once it comes online I will start moving data over.

For the time being I made one modification to the type of table PUX uses, I noticed ArveeClub already uses the type,  "InnoDB"" I've also noticed that when PUX is having problems arveeclub is doing beter... not great just better.

For the moment things are a little more quiet this evening so I don't expect too much more trouble again until tomorrow.
