Title says it.  Brakes.

How feasible is it to ADD brakes to a previously brake-less camper.  Not that I think it NEEDS it that much, but in a breakaway condition ...

It's a 94 Jayco 1006.  Dexter axle (replaced).

It's easy if the axle has the flanges.

You can buy kits to install the brakes pretty cheaply.

I think it has the flanges.  I'll have to check and see, though.  Do I have to have a special brake controller, or will the vehicle brake lights activate the trailer brakes?

You'll need a brake controller. A good one is about $100 and is fairly easy to install, depending on the TV.

I have found this place to be a good (reasonably priced) source for trailer parts:

What you are looking for in the axle is a square plate with four bolt holes in it.  The brake mechanism bolts to that.

It is easy if the plates are there.  I recently had a brake magnet short out, and decided to replace the shoes as well.  It was cheaper to buy whole new assemblies than buy magnet s and shoes (but I didn't need drums - you probably do).  It turned out to be less work, too.

As for controllers, there are not many timer-based controllers around now days, but if someone tries to sell you one, run - do not walk - to the nearest exit.  Look for the word "inertial" in the name, on the package, or in the literature.

If you're not sure about anything, just ask.
