Hello Mid-Atlantic Folks, I need your help!! I am planning on driving back East to partake in the 140th reenactment at Gettysburg July 4-6.  I tried getting campground reservations back in November and was told that all the local CGs were full.  I tried Drummerboy, Roundtop, Devils Den, Gettysburg KOA, and any others that I could find, without any luck.  Now I turn to you for advice, how far away from Gettysburg can I comfortably camp?  Basically, if I were to put a circle compass on a map with Gettysburg as the center, where on the map could I place the lead and draw a circle to start calling for reservations?  Also, if anyone from that area has any suggestions, I would be greatly appreciative. I won t say that I m desperate YET, but I am close to panicing!!

Civil_War_BuffI would suggest that you reserve a (gulp) hotel room in the meantime.  If you cannot get a campground reservation you will have something to fall back on.  If you do end up finding a campground site you can reserve, then you can always cancel the hotel reservation.

I wish I knew the area more, but wish you luck in finding a site.

Civil_War_BuffIf you don t have luck in PA, I d say there are certainly places in Maryland that would not be completely unrealistic to get back and forth to Gettysburg.

Check out this thread from the old board on the area of Thurmont, MD just over the border from PA.

How often do you anticipate you would make the circuit from battlefield to campsite?

Yogi is a little further away in Hagerstown - certainly still a manageable drive... www.jellystonemaryland.com

There are definitely options available to you.

Civil_War_BuffI grew up in Gettysburg and still go back to visit family and friends so I don t have a campsite issue.  Sis lives right next to the Peace Light and Bro lives in Historic part of Downtown.  Homestead is on edge of Picketts Charge Field and we used to watch reenactment from our back yard.

It dosen t suprise me that that everybody is already full up.  G-burg is always loaded for the Big Event.

Gamecock Camper has a good suggestion but I ll bet all the rooms are gone too.

Got Woody has the right idea.  The Route 15 corridor North and South of G-burg give you pretty quick travel to G-burg from outside the area.  I d say if you can get within an hour either side your looking good.  That would put you North past Harrisburg and South past Emmitsburg & Thurmont.  You can also look outbound on Route 30 but this is a slower highway creating more drive time.

You may want to contact the Gettysburg Chamber of Commerce as they may be able to help out.  They are used to BIG infulx at this time and probably have some guidence available.

If you still are having problems e-mail me and I ll check with family & friends down there.

MOST IMPORTANT - When you DO get there ---- ENJOY - ENJOY !!!!!!!  If this is your first time for the reenactment it s really cool.  Boy, could I tell you some stories.

I plan on reenacting Day 1 and day 3 with Saturday reserved for viewing other battlefields in Md. and such.  So, I would go once over and back on day 1, and the same on day 3. I don t even know what is reasonable.[&:]

 Thanks for the help.

Civil_War_BuffI can tell you about a couple of camp grounds in my area, but we are 2 hours from the park.  Let me know if you want more info.

NCSunshine

Civil_War_BuffI do not know anything personally about the area, but I use the Trailer Life CG Directory alot for us.  So I looked up a couple of towns around the area.

Gardners has Mountain Creek CG rated 8.5/9.5/8 out of 10/10/10 website www.mtncreekcg@aol.com phone number 717-486-7681.  There is a state park also Pine Grove Furnace not rated phone number 717-486-7174 website pinegrove@dcnr.state.pa.us  .  Another state park in Fayetteville, Caledonia phone number 717-352-2161 website caledonia@dcne.state.pa.us also not rated.   In Hanover another state park Codorus phone number 717-637-2816 website codorus@dcnr.state.pa.us

 Hope this helps[:)]

Civil_War_BuffWe live in Hagerstown, MD, a relatively easy drive (45 mins?) from Gettysburg.  We had the Antietam re-enactment 1/2 a mile from our house.   It might be worth it, and cheaper to camp here at Jellystone Park, or KOA also relatively near us.  It also puts you near the other Civil War sites of Antietam, Harpers Ferry, Monacacy, South Mountain (Turner s Gap), Winchester, etc.

Email me if you want more details.

Civil_War_BuffLast year we stayed at the Harper s Ferry Koa and went to Gettysburg. It was not a bad trip up to Gettysburg.  Had a real good time. They have a nice size pool.

 Civil_War_BuffCWB,

Can t help you directly with any campgrounds near Gettysburg. But, someone posted this Yahoo link for us on the old board. You can change whatever comes up to Gettysburg and it will tell you ALL the campgrounds from there outwards with the mileage. Hope it helps a bit.

Thanks everyone.  I am so pleased with the calibre of people on this forum.  I contacted rjs826 and he has graciously allowed me to have a site that turned out to be available next to them.

I was truly at wits end, and it is people like those on this forum that make our hobby/pastime one that is like none other.

A big thank you to rjs826, and thank you to all that have given me links, ideas, and information on finding a campsite near Gettysburg.

Civil_War_BuffGlad you found a site! I was going to suggest trying [link=http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/caledonia.htm]Caledonia SP[/link], nice place, I stayed there for a night last year, and not far from G-Burg...
