OK, I would like to make a website for my girl scout troop to keep the parents informed.  What s the best place these days to set one up?  I used Homestead several years ago, but knew some of you would have some good options.

shirleybA lot of folks seem to like www.webshots.com for their pics. It s free as well as Tripod and a few others. Good luck.

 shirleybShirley,

My scout troop has a site on tripod.  There are some pop-up windows but I think it s easy to set up the site.

shirleybI use tripod for my web site and found it very easy to use, just point and click

shirleybI have to agree with campingcop that tripod is good.  Thats where my site is from.  But be warned;  Tripod is apparently trying to force out the free sites and go to an all pay site.  If you have a free site with them you may end up getting locked out of your site building unless you upgrade to a pay plan.  I probably will go to the $4.95 per month plan because I don t want to lose all the work I have put into it.  A few people have already been locked out of theirs and can t work their site untill they upgrade.  This hasn t happened to me yet but may in the near future.

I have gotten this information from a very reliable source who builds pages for some of the sites on tripod.  A few of her clients have already been locked out.

I was going to upgrade for more space and bandwidth this month, but now I will wait to see what happens.

This is the reason I moved my site from Homestead.com to my own domain.  Slowly the free sites go away.

Starcraft Dad, Do you have Microsoft Front Page and Internet Explorer?  If so you can go to your site in IE and under the " File"  dropdown menu you will have a selection to " Edit in Frontpage" .  Using this feature you can download your entire site one page at a time into FrontPage.  Then you can publish it to any hosting service.

I recomend everyone get their own domain and jsut pay to have it hosted.  I use [link=http://www.webstrikesolutions.com/hosting.html]WebStrikeSolutions[/link] as my web host.  They offer free hosting for the first 12 months.  To set up a website they charge a $30 set up fee and IIRC $60 to register the domain.

So, the first year is around $90 and then $84 the second year for hosting.  These costs are based on 100meg storage and 2GB monthly transfer.  Anything over 2GB per month costs an extra $6.  So far I have only gone over the 2GB one month.

shirleybCheck with your ISP. Most offer webhosting as part of your monthly package. I have Comcast Cable Internet and the provide 5 e-mail address and 25mb webpage

shirleybWeb hosting Great Service and you can get your own address. www.websiteworld.com They host 2 sites for me and do a great job. You can run databases and all on their servers along all frontpage options work as well! !  If you check them out please tell them that  Randy from TN pop Up Campers sent you.      BEST OF ALL NO POP UP WINDOWS ! ! ! ! ! ! !

shirleybI agree with Starcraft Dad, I think a lot of the free website hosting sites are going out the window.  Up here in Canada, one of the biggest ISP providers is Sympatico.ca.  They did have a Tripod.ca, so if you were a sympatico member, you got free bandwidth and everything.

In December they shut down the free portion so we had a choice of staying and paying or picking another free provider.  I decided to move to Tripod.com because the company that Sympatico choose were relatively unheard of and Tripod.com had been around for a while. If Tripod.com decides to charge in the future, I will pay.  It was a major PITA to have to transfer all my files and pictures.  I was thinking of upgrading my accounts but after hearing Starcraft Dad s comments, I think I may just wait and see.

I don t take advantage of the tools that Tripod.com has simply because Tripod.ca was totally different and if you wanted to do different things to your website, you had to learn HTML, which wasn t that difficult thanks to a lot of advise and guidance from PUT members.
