Gamecock Camper

That is the title of one of the articles in Camping Life magazine this month (January / February 2003).  This article claims it will help you find the best towable RV.  It had some interesting things to say .... like this:

" Most pop-ups aren t too sophisticated in terms of what s onboard, but then again, you probably won t miss the TV or microwave oven."

I guess they really don t know the people here.  I have both a microwave and TV for my pop-up, but I don t bring them with me very often.

They also had a TOP TEN RV-SHOPPING QUESTION guide (Certainly slanted towards other camper types as you will see when reviewing the questions)....

 1) Can you and your mate strech out and sleep comfortably on the master bed?

Boy, that s certainly one thing that pop-ups have....larger beds than most other types of campers.

 2) Where will you store your gear?  What about your clothes?

I think this question was written by a woman.... oops, well it is an important question....

 3) Is there adequate counter space in the galley for food preparation?  Drawers for pots and pans?

In both my old pop-up and my new, I have plenty of space to store the pots and pans, but I prepare my food outside of the camper in a camp kitchen.

 4) Can you stand up in the shower stall?  Does the showerhead reach your head?

I m tall and in every camper type I ve ever seen the showerhead (when there is one) would clean my bellybutton really well.

 5) How large is the black (waste) tank?  How many days will that last?

I would think that any sized black water tank could be seen as sufficient.  It depends on how big the family and how many beers...

 6) What are the capacities of fresh and greywater tanks?  How long will that last?

Same as question 5 above, it depends on how efficeint you are.

 7) Will my kids sleep together on a small converted dinette bed?

The two bunks and dinette (when a bed) are all used and quite big... especially compared to the narrow bunks I ve seen in some travel trailers.

 8) Do drawers and cabinets have latches so they don t fly open when driving?

 I sure hope so.

 9) Does the seating accommodate everyone if we re all inside at once?

Yes (family of 5), but we spend as much time OUTDOORS as possible.

 10) When all the beds are down, can everyone reach the bathroom without having to crawl over someone?

Yes, and I do make those " middle of the night"  nature calls.

Gamecock Camper" Most pop-ups aren t too sophisticated in terms of what s onboard, but then again, you probably won t miss the TV or microwave oven."
I guess we are the unsophisticated type then? I do sometimes bring a portable TV, usually never works though.[&:]

 1) Can you and your mate strech out and sleep comfortably on the master bed?
Agree, certainly not  problem in ours either.

 2) Where will you store your gear? What about your clothes? I always get a kick out of everyone s coments on needing more storage. We have storage all around ours, most of it is half full at most. And I could probably get rid of half of it, cause we never use it. I guess we just don t bring much compaired to others, or our trailer just has alot of space?

 3) Is there adequate counter space in the galley for food preparation? Drawers for pots and pans? We have alot of counter too, but most cooking is outside.

 4) Can you stand up in the shower stall? Does the showerhead reach your head?
Never had a problem, but then I use CG showers[&:]

 5) How large is the black (waste) tank? How many days will that last?
Only black waste on our is the portapotti, now that the kids are older. It hardly gets used, but I do bring it for emergencies.

 6) What are the capacities of fresh and greywater tanks? How long will that last? Our fresh water is fine too, but it just supplies a sink.

 7) Will my kids sleep together on a small converted dinette bed?
Never would share, boy and girl[: (], but they each have their own space already.

 8) Do drawers and cabinets have latches so they don t fly open when driving? Duh, is there really a company making one that doesn t?

 9) Does the seating accommodate everyone if we re all inside at once?
Oh yes, plus about 5 more people.

 10) When all the beds are down, can everyone reach the bathroom without having to crawl over someone? Yes... No climbing over anybody in ours, except when ya share a bunk.
But if I wanted to unzip the window and jump down I could.[:D]

Gamecock CamperI love our pop-up, but to me, the perfect RV is...

 an Airplane!

They don t review those in Camping Life!

" Sites"  for airplanes are called hangars.  They re quite large.  I ve backed more than one plane into a hangar, and it s a lot easier than backing a Bayside into a campsite.

BTW, Yes, there are fly-in campgrounds.

Gamecock CamperHmmm. . . we must have bought blind. Didn t even think about a shower, no black water containment (unless you consider the chamber under the seat of the portapotty tucked away in a storage area), had to go out and get grey water ones.  Never dawned us that the doors wouldn t have some type of latches.[:o]

Oh well, at least it fits in our garage so we can take off any time we want and we do all fit comfortably on the rainy days, even the dogs.[:D]

Gamecock CamperBefore I answer your questions, Camping Life must have forgot the 2003 Starcraft Centennial, It has the built in microwave, stove and oven.

 On to your questions.
 1.  YES
 2. ONES THAT HANG, IN THE BACK OF MY SUV, OTHER ITEMS UNDER THE FRONT STORAGE, I ALSO TAKE AN IRON  AND SMALL BOARD FOR QUICK TOUCH UPS
 3. YES
 4. YES AND NO
 5. DON T KNOW, I ALWAYS CAMP WHERE THERE IS WATER, IF NOT I TAKE A LARGE GARDEN HOSE WITH ME TO RUN FROM THE WATER TO MY CAMPER.  WE HAVE HAD TO SHARE HOSES WITH OTHER CAMPERS, BUT AFTER THEY WERE ALL HOOKED TOGETHER, WE ALL HAD THE WATER WE NEEDED.
 6.  DON T KNOW
 7.  NO, WE HAVE ALL THE BEDS WE NEED.
 8.  YES
 9.  YES, WE ARE A FAMILY OF 4, 5 AND SOMETIMES 6
 10. YES.

jackgoesthepopup

 Gamecock Camper1 yes
2 in the back of the van thats why i got a big one.
3 yes but we do our cooking outside.
 4 Don t have a shower
5 It depends on how much chile we eat.
6 don t have any tanks.
7 it s ether that our they can sleep on the floor.
 8 Nope.
9 yeah we sit down in there.
10 Heres the tricky part. I sleep on the back side by the canvas. And this got me thinking. Us guys don t really have to go outside. We can just put a funnel between the canvas and the bed frame going outside. Don t have to get over anyone that way. i don t think one of those things that enable women to write there name in the snow would work for them.
