Holly and I went on a Saturday afternoon drive today, just dreaming and looking at large plats of land. We got off road a few times, ran through some deep water (flooding here in Tennessee), and ultimately went to a town a few miles away to eat at a local Cafe.

When we got out of the cafe, walking back to the truck, I noticed that the trailer wiring had come loose from its roost on my bumper, and had dragged the ground for much of our excursion today. The four-flat plug is ruined, and I will need to replace it.

Since i will be cuttin  and splicin  anyway, I thought there might be something interesting to add while I have the wires separated. I have thought about adding a backup light, but we rarely hookup at night, and my reverse lights are very bright anyway.

Do you guys have any suggestions before I fix this thing? I may actually do nothing but fix it, but I want to use the opportunity to make lemonade out of lemons.

On the four wire plug. The white is ground, the brown one is for your running lights. The yellow is for your left turn signal, And the greenis for the right. You reallly can t add something. But i will tell you what i did. I swithched from a four wire plu to a 7. I tied one of thease new wires to my back up lights. Then i put 2 driving lights on the read bumper of the camper. So if i had to back up at night. I had plenty of light to see. I also mounted a driving light on the front tounge of the camper. That is turned on and off from a switch mounted on the dash. I did this so when i go to set op camp and it s dark .I turn on this light so when i unhook the camper. This way both of my hands are free and don t have to use a flash light. Also when i spliced o in to the wires i didn t use cremp on connecter s. I stripped back the insulaion on the wire and soldered them together. And then covered the splice with heat and shink tape so i got a water tight seal. i also wire tied the plug so it sticks out about 1 inch from the bumper so it can t drag the ground. What happened to you also happened to me also.

brainpauseLarry, they make a nice 7 pin socket with a 4 pin on the side.. I think Napa or Wal--Mart has them.. I would put one of those on..

Just remember solder & heat shrink!

brainpauseI ve owned my share of vehicles where the previous owner cut and spliced wires for the trailer wiring. Why could nt they just buy a T-connector? $15 bucks at most parts stores.
Up here in the Snow/Rust Belt, wiring up connectors without soldering/taping is just plain stupid. I don t remember how many times I ve had to rewire the back of my vehicle because the previous idiot didn t do the job properly just to save money.[:@]
 Just my $.02[;)]

brainpauseWell, I live on a nurse s salary, so that is one reason I won t buy another wiring harness and just replace it. Those Nissan harnesses aren t cheap!

If the soldering and heat shrinking is done correctly, it won t matter. I grew up with a pork chop in one hand and a soldering iron in the other.

brainpauseDang Larry... do you know how long it is going to take to get that image out of my head... LOL

You have the right idea.. Solder & heat shrink.. (try to buy the good glue filled stuff if you can..

As for the socket.. fller  up with dialetric grease...
