Folks,

After many trips camping over the years I have noticed that not all campers are the same in the style that they camp. Myself, well I like to setup a camp site and then kind of use it as a base camp for going, seeing and doing in the local area. Of course I try to camp at a camp grounds I have never been too before. For some reason I can not sit all day at a camp site unless there is something that needs to be done.

Over the past four or five weekends, I have noticed that campers come into a camp grounds setup and sit there all weekend long. Is this the norm for you all?

Could this be due to the amount of times one camps per year?

whitestar505No, I agree with you.  I ll admit it does take me some time to get started in the morning, but you should really have something to do during the day!  Definately if your at a place you ve never been before.  What s the point if your driving there, setting up camp, and sitting around?  Camping is a challenge for me as a mother, so I like to take full advantage of everything in the area to keep the boys entertained!  [;)]

whitestar505If I go to a local CG then I hang at the CG all the time because I have already been in the area. If it is away from home then I am more likely to leave the CG.

I sometimes pick a local CG for the activities it offers and when I travel far away the CG s amenities are less important because the area I traveled to is the purpose of the trip.

whitestar505We don t sit still either. If we re at a campground with a pool and other activities, we do those things.  If we re at a campground with no activities, it s usually because there are things in the area to see and do.  The most sitting I ever do while camping is when we go tot Raystown Lake near Altoona, PA.  We re set up right on the shore of the lake so I sit and watch the boats and kids playing in the lake.  Of course, that is only when we re not out on the lake swimming.

We re headed to Raystown lake in a week and a half!!!  We can t wait!

whitestar505We usually seek to do and see things in the area.  In fact, it is the primary reason we will visit a campground.  If the campground is in the middle of nowhere with nothing to see or do, then it s unlikely we will visit.

OTOH, if we are staying more than a few days, and the campground has a few cool things like a pool or a place for canoes or paddleboats, AND the sites are shady, we might take a day and just " be lazy"  at the campground.

But this is the exception. We tend to squeeze the life out of every day, and often return to the campground long after dark, too exhausted to do anything but sleep.

whitestar505Guilty!! I am one of the ones who takes a day or two and just sits around. I spend my whole other life running and I need to sit around and veg out. I like to putter around the site and pu and do a  whole lot of nuttin. The rest of the time I am running kids and two jobs and busy volunteer schedule I have no time to sit at home so I take advantage of the ability to do nothing while camping. We do take the time to canoe or hike and see the sites but sometimes its good to  relax.

whitestar505I guess we re the unusual ones.  We usually go and just relax.  Sit around and enjoy the outdoors.  Living in the city and running constantly with the DD s over the past years, we just enjoy sitting and relaxing.

We thought that when the DD s got their driver s licence, we d have more free time, but seems that we just ran more and more.

Now that both are out of high school, we are enjoying going away just to camp.

whitestar505We do both.  Part of the camping experience for us is the fact that it lends itself so well to the art of relaxation.  So we do spend some time hangin  out.   But, if it s an area we haven t been to before, and it offers chances to see and do new things we will do that too.   We don t have kids at home any more, so don t have to entertain anyone but ourselves.  I really enjoy sitting with a cup of coffee and a good book and listening to the birds, etc.

whitestar505We are road trippers!   The biggest reason we bought the PU was so we could continue to travel the country with the kids ~ can t afford to stay all those nights in a hotel.  We get up in the morning eat breakfast, leave and don t return to the CG until dinner time!  (We ve never even had time to set up the awning! LOL)

That being said ~ we really enjoyed meeting up with a few other campers and just hanging out at the CG watching the kids play and enjoying each other s company ... something we ve never done before!

I guess that means we re learning to do both.  It seems when we hit the road for the big Family Vacation ~ we spend very little time at the CG.  But, when we re with a group of other campers ~ the whole point is to enjoy each other s company and sometimes the best way to do that is by relaxing at the CG!

whitestar505For us, it depends on the weather, where we are camping and what we all feeling like doing or not doing. We ve spent a day or two just hanging out around the cg, we ve had days when the bikes get put on the van and we re working hard to join the OTBSC (Over The Bar Scar Club).

We have no set way of camping, we just go with what we re feeling like those particular days.

 whitestar505It depends where I m camping........ I do stay outside don t like sitting inside [: (].

But if I have a campsite right on the lake or river, like this weekend, I might stay there alot. I m sure we ll be riding the bikes around the CG trails.

I doubt we will leave the campground this weekend, there isn t too much to do around that area. But there is plenty to do in the campground.

whitestar505We never sit around in the campground.  We don t go to campgrounds that don t offer the things we like to do.  We love to hike and usually take off first thing after breakfast and return in time for drinks before dinner.  Even if it rains.  We usually won t hike if there is lightening so we do have a back-up plan (involves site-seeing in the car).  Even our close to home trips involve hikes.  There are numerous trails in our area and we won t live long enough to hike them all and there are lots we will do more than once so I don t see us changing the way we do things.  We do hope to get canoes or kayaks in the future and add that activity to our trips.

On short trips (2 days) this is what we usually do a lot of.  It s time t recharge the batteries for a couple of days.  Maybe a bit of hiking and fishing in the park but little " touring" .  We save that for our longer trips.  Just the way we like to do it.

Campntime

whitestar505Depends on the trip.  If far from home, it is a base camp and we are out sight seeing and exploring.  If close to home..either just hike and relax or return home during the middle of the day to do a few chores.

whitestar505I m with the " i lead a hectic life and want to relax at a CG"   group.  I usually go for places that have water - ocean, spring, even pool - best thing about KOAs are the ones with hot tubs.

When tent camping, there s no way you can stay indoors, but in my nice, comfortable, air conditioned popup!!!   I can sit inside and do some sewing or scrapbooking whicle I watch a movie.

Some trips involve kayaking, but that adds a lot more loading and unloading and hosing down of equipment.

Having a PU has changed my camping lifestyle - or maybe it s an age thing[;)].

For the first time ever, I ve arranged to stay at Florida s newest State Park - Silver River SP over the week of Thanksgiving.  I ll be there from 11/22 - 11/30... email me privately if you d like to go and I ll send you the " flyer."   I ve never stayed more than 3 days at a CG.  We plan to do some kayaking and I will probably do some local sightseeing.

Previous MO was to be on the move more, now I tend to look for places where a longer stay will be enjoyable.  It goes against my " see as much as I can"  grain, but I also look forward to less work and hassle.
