Hey larry, one question, how slow a heart can beat. few days ago mine was at 55 per minute , with BP 115/71 and I felt like I was dying ...... Light headed, short of breath, dizzy ....... got better after 15 minutes or so ..... Should I have called 911 ?

tlhdoc

Birol call your doctor and talk to her. :(

She is sick and tired of my questions. I already told her I get little bit dizzy sometimes, and she noted and asked me how long it lasts and said, it is because your BP is changing, and your body is not used to it. I don't want to whine to her, as she will think I am nuts. Or will increase the dosage of the medicine so I simply die and don't bug her anymore  :D

tlhdoc

If you die it will make her look bad,  so she may get tired of hearing from you, :o  but I don't think she will kill you.  I bet she isn't even tired of hearing from you.  Your health is her job. :)

She had a white coat, and everytime I go see her my BP goes up ! She doesn't believe that outside her office my BP is so low, boooohoooooooo

tlhdoc

Why does your BP go up when you see her?    :(    :)

Its a common occurance.  We in the medical field call it "White Coat Syndrome".

B-flat

It has something to do with anxiety when visiting medical professionals.  There's a sense of "not knowing" which comes into play during this time.  Yep those white coats represent "they're coming to take me away, haha, hehe,ha ho.":D

First, be assured that 55 is not too low, nor is your blood pressure. The answer your doc gave you is a reasonable explanation.

That said, when I give beta blockers to my patients, I usually tell them to check their heart rate immediately before taking the dose, and if it is below 50 (sometimes 55), to hold that dose.

I'm not telling you to do this AT ALL. Follow your doc's instructions.

Birol, your heart rate can get down VERY low (say, 30's). If it is caused by the beta blocker and not some other problem, then it won't kill ya. You'll probably just feel crummy. I only say that so you won't be afraid to take the medicine.

The White Coat Syndrome may have sounded like a joke, but it is a phenomenon that is observed very often, and quite possibly in more patients than not.

Remember that I said to take your BP/HR morning and night, andkeep a written record. There is really no need to take your vital signs more often than that.

You made me feel better ...... Thanks Larry. I was worried that it was too low. How ignorant I was, not knowing how low it can get, or it should be. I think most of the feeling was physological that night. I never saw it that low and panicked probably. I am more used to seeing 90+ and so on  :(

I will record my pressure and heart rate from today on. twice a day eh, I do it like 5 times a day .... and sometimes it is not what I want to see, goes up to 135/85 .... doctor said she is aiming for 120/71 or around ....... The good thing with that is, I don't get tired easily anymore  :D  I used to run out of breat after 30 minutes of say organizing the basement and stuff, now I do it for hours
before saying, lets take a break  :p

At my last visit, I knew that she wanted to bring the dosage to 100 mg a day, but when she heard that it is around 120/71-75 at home, she said, this is what we want, lets not increase it.
