Kathy (Acer's wife) asked me today about the pot luck dinner. As of right now I told her we just haven't got that far into it yet, but she seems anxious to get things going. They also intend on arriving on Thursday afternoon or evening like I'm going to do.

At any rate, she wanted to know what she should plan on this year, and asked about the Swedish Meatballs, and of course Acer will make his famous hot crab dip. So I don't expect everyone to weigh in on this subject so soon, but guess Kathy is so I'll post it here....

Acer (John) - Hot Crab Dip
Kathy - Swedish Meatballs
GoneCamping (Cliff) - Wings of fire again?

Cliff,

I you want a building for the pot-luck, you need to decide pretty quickly what day and time you need it.  The shelters do not have electricity, and it looks like you may have too many people just to use a campsite.

We have a conference center similar to the one we used at Douthat that I could hold, or a larger Dining Hall with a HUGE kitchen. Let me know!

Well, the date would be pretty easy, the Pot-Luck would be Saturday afternoon/evening. Question is, how much would that cost, and would everyone be willing to chip in for it?

I had a post to you below (another thread) asking about site #42, which opens to the field and could handle a large group of people. We also want to use that site for group evening campfires too. I'll go with whatever you recommend since you work there and know the place inside & out.

Site 42 is okay for small groups, but you still would only have one small ground grill on the site. I'm not sure you could fit more than 6-8 people around it. There is a seperate, larger group fire ring in the campground that I can request use of.  It shouldn't be a problem unless the naturalist has another program scheduled in the fire ring at the same time.  How about if we ask for a program at the campfire ring  for US...then we have it covered for our use, as well.  "Welcome Campfires" with the naturalist are free. (Lasts about 30 minutes - basically it just gives info on the park, park history, and surrounding areas.)

Saturday night for the potluck is fine. The Dining Hall is a short drive away (about 1-1/2 miles back into the woods) and has an indoor fireplace. It also has an industrial size kitchen, and seats about 100.  I MAY be able to get it no charge...since it is out of season and because it is Easter Weekend we don't have any other reservations requesting it.

I doubt at this point we will be able to camp with you all...but we will be there for the potluck and any night campfires I can arrange to get free for!  Let me know if you need anything else.

Hmmmm, either way is fine with me. We did the group fire in a single site at Trap Pond and it seemed to work just fine. The group fire ring Louise is talking about is just a few site's further up the road, not far from the main group of campers....I suspect some of us will be up near there anyway. Sounds do-able, and might save us all a few coins.

The Pot-luck in the Conference Center could work to our advantage, particularly if it's raining out! Anyone want to voice an opinion here? The only disadvantage is we'd all have to drive to the Pot-Luck....

Comments?

Cliff;
Like Louise stated, we did a very similar thing at Douthat SP. It was about 1.5 mile drive with plenty of parking. That location also had rest rooms that we could use. It was great, and I think that is a good idea for the pot luck dinner..

Rich and I have been to the dinning hall Louise is refering to and it is WONDERFUL with lots of parking. The kitchen in a full kitchen with an ice machine and oven, microwave , refrigerator, ets. I am all for driving there. The group campfire offered by the park would be good idea also. It will be between 8-9pm when we arrive Thursday.

Sounds like it'll work!

On another note...... Louise, does Pocahontas have a play ground? I can't remember if there is one there or not. Bevgirl & Davester5 have asked me that a couple of times now, they have some young ones that are very much into the playground thing?!?!

I know they have a small playground down by the water. They may have a new one with the completion of the pool complex. I don't remember seeing another one when we were there last year

Still need pot luck info. ACER & Kathy seem to think one or the other, I told them my vote was for the Crab Dip!!!! :D

I'll tell Jeffrey about the Wings of Fire. He liked them last year...

Put me in for a Meatloaf if Kathy is not going to do meatballs.  I do a mean one in the microwave, and I have this neat microwave plastic tube pan that can be rolled up...

I'll ty to get ahold of Donna to see what she will bring.

SheBantam

Talked to Donna last night. Seems her trip will be shorter. Her kids are in school that week due to some making up some snow days.  She will be there Friday and leave on Monday.

She said she will bring pasta or potato salad.

Gone-Camping

All right, sounds good to me.

I got the following from Kathy this eveing...
QuoteJohn is making Crab dip and I'll make the Oreo Dessert thing
BTW, I think the oreo thing has something to do with my birthday,
which is a week before this little shindig!!!

Unless we need a different type of item (ie dessert, appetizer), you can put me down for broccoli salad.

Did we ever get anything going about the easter egg hunt?  I have a 4 year old that would be very interested (10 yo probably would be too).  I can help but not so sure I'm up for organizing the whole thing.

So far no one has volunteered for that. My 2 are too old for Easter Egg's...Well, 10 Y/O probably would still like to participate, but I'm not even sure they are going to be with me on this trip. Seems their Grandpa is going to take them to Missouri to visit with their Mom, which they haven't seen in 6 years. Not sure who'll be with me, but I'm sure someone will volunteer to go camping...never seems to be a shortage there!!! ;)
