Didn't mention it because I cheked the paper work I have and it did not include the calieprs or the cylinders .. When the service advisor checked them they were included though, which makes me wonder if I checked the wrong type on the internet, or maybe they excluded it for later years. I checked the most current one on Fords esp site.

I am glad I will be over this with minimum amount plus have the comfort of knowing that the hitch is upto towing the trailer :)

Why didnt you mention that? Why even try to fix it yourself then?

I also buy warrenties for as long as they will sell. (usually 5yr /100,000)
I tend to drive them for a long time, and IMO towing is hard on them or else I'm just hard on them? And have a pretty good dealer that I trust.
Well, I trust them when I don't have to pay the bill anyway. I will see after the warrenty is over.

So far I have had $5400 claims on my Safari ($1200) warrenty. And it happens to be at my dealer Right now, for front end work. Have to get all the bugs out before it runs out in Nov.

In Nov it should have nearly 100,000 and will still be in good shape thanks to the warrenty work.
I have a 96 Geo Metro that has 113,000 miles on it and have only replaced the clutch and front brakes including the calipers and rotors.

Also have a 2001 Dodge Ram that has 86,000 miles and I haven't replaced anything on it except for wear items like tires, just regular maintenance. I never have and will never buy an extended warranty. I have seen many warranty claims for $2500 worth of work when the vehicle only needed about $200 worth.

Seems like the Metro 3 cylinder rates much higher in reliability and customer satisfaction than some people think.:yikes:

Extended warranties are a big gamble, they bet you won't need it and you bet you will. They don't sell them for what they cost, but they do so to make a profit.

Jeffrey....you and Birol might want to try to figure out what you two are doing wrong;)

They lost on me then, good thing they dont check my service history when they sell them.

LOL, The only thing I did wrong this time was buy a GMC
This Safari was definately the worst vehicle I have ever owned as far as repairs. The only differance as far as what I did was a owning a PU.
Always had them serviced when it was recommended.

This is what I can remember......
An Oil line was  replaced
A Steering seal replaced?
Rear diff seal replaced twice
Fuel pump or something (1200 bucks)
New Transmission at 90,000
Some steering parts
Plus There were a few other smaller things and they always gave a rental.

I will see just bought a used Ford, also bought the warrenty to 100,000.
So I will see if I have any claims on that one.

BUT my experience when I  drive them over 100,000 I have always had at least one repair over a thousand $$$ so it's been a safe bet.

I had an extended warranty on my Jeep when I bought it, it was for 2 years and cost me $1200 (financed into the car cost). It more than paid for itself. Within 3 months of purchase, I had the Jeep at the transmission shop, total on that bill came to $1100, and I didn't have to pay the deductable because I was friends with the transmission shop owner and he wrote it off.

Then the crank sensor went bad, and I sent the Jeep over to the Dealer. I had to pay the $50 deductable there, but they replaced the sensor, replaced the LF Caliper, and one motor mount. They also took care of a minor recall while it was there. All in all the bill came to $700.

Last summer the A/C went on the fritz, and around here you don't last long without a really good operating A/C. The compressor was locked up, and the old R12 system needed to be retrofit to the 134A freon system, so it needed a new accumulator and a hose, plus a few other parts. That was another $1100 job, I paid $50 for that too!

So for the $1200 purchase price (plus whatever finance charges went into it) I got $2900 of service work out of it! Seems like a bargain to me!

Anyone who buys a second hand windstar and doesn't work the cost of extended warranty into the cost of the vehicle is asking for it !

Windstars are money pits ! They are good when they work but they gooble loads of money ! I am sure we wilol more than break even with the extended warranty on this one. We already have a small transmission seal leaking slightly :) Under observation. god knoiws what else will go wrong in the next 1.5 years ... once they hit 60K miles these things fall apart ! And I am not dumb enough buy a new one for 35K ! Well did it once and recovered :)

I purchased an aftermarket extended warranty from Warranty Direct and have been happy so far.  Unfortunately, I've already had a claim on my Durango.  It needed a new Water Pump at 38,000!  Luckily, the seat heater went before the regular warranty was up or it would have cost $450 (List price) for just the part!  Based on the above EXPENSIVE problems so far with the Durango, I am VERY thankful we got an extended warranty!

Having had 2 Windstars, and towed with both, I have to disagree.  I bought the first one with 25,000 miles on it.  The only problem we had with the 95 Windstar was the dealer - they destroyed it, which forced us into the 2d Windstar under Ford's program to get the 95's off the road (Ford really WANTED to get this model off the road).

The last extended warranty I bought in 1985 convinced me not to buy another one.

Wynot, you were really lucky then. I hope your good luck keeps up ! My next minivan, if we ever buy another one, is going to be a Sienna, no questions. But we will probably get a second hand explorer and tow a hybrid with it before we get another minivan :)

For the record : This is the 4,000'th post by me on this board I LOVE PUT  :p

I towed 3 years with a 1999 Windstar and I still miss it.  It was my favorite vehicle ever.  The Explorer is better for towing and has 4 wheel drive.  Otherwise I would have another Windstar or a Freestar. :)

Just think Birol - If we hadn't gotten the second Windstar, you wouldn't have a trailer hitch...from us at least...

birol

The hitch is firmly in ! They drilled the holes for for the third set of nuts/bolts. I gotta buy them and install them ! All ready to tow now ! The hitch was on a 98 windstar right ? It was supposed to be a bolt on, but obviously Ford changed something underneath the car at one time. Ours is a January 1998 production ....

According to Reese, the hitch was for a 95-98 Windstar.  The third set of holes probably is because it is a Class III hitch.  Drilling through that sheet metal wouldn't be that big a deal.

birol

I had it drilled properly when the car was at the dealer, I wanted the holes to be horizaontal and right across each other. It towed the PU beautifully. I am going to cehck the nuts for tightness and see if there is any abnormal thingie magicie going on ....

I am soo happy I got that hitch so cheap hehehehhehe
