Upcoming Camping season & Gas Prices

It's looking like the gas prices will surpass last summers by a decent margin.
Has or will the fast rising gas prices affect how far you go to camp?

We have planned more closer to home weekends than ever, the area where we usualy go for quick weekends (about 210 miles one way) is a good tank of gas there and back. That would be over 70 bucks in gas for 2 nights camping. So we bit the bullet and will camp within an hr from home for quickies (less than a quarter tank both ways).  We sure will miss the forest for those fast weekends.

Marcy, between the gas price increase and the increase to camp in Ontario this year, camping seems to be slowly becoming not so much a cheap alternative for a family vacation anymore.

We are camping a lot about 1 1/2 hr from home.  I am not sure how much more gas will cost and they raise the camping fee each year by $1.  That isn't much but it adds up after going there for what will be our 12th year.  If finances stay alright, the cost of gas won't affect us but otherwise it might.

I agree, Tammy.  We have one road trip planned ~ about 800 miles one way ~ but the rest of the time we'll be sticking close to home too. [/FONT]

We are lucky enough to have a great campground on West Point Lake ( all the sites are right on the lake) that is less than 60 miles from our home. Pulling the PU there and back, and a couple of trips into town we use less that 1/2 a tank of gas for the entire weekend.  This will cost us about $ 25 bucks of gas for the entire weekend. The sites are $ 20.00 per night for full hook-up.... with out sewer, so I'm  not going to let the rising gas prices get in the way of my camping enjoyment.

Hope a lot of you all have simular situations you can fall back on. But by all means, don't let the gas prices get in the way of your plans.... Lord knows, we all need a little R & R.

It's not going to stop me, it's just going to stop me from going as far for 2 nighters. We already have 25 nights planned,(this planning so far ahead is weird, but the closer parks fill fast) including our 9 nights at Hocking.
I guess the up side of all this planning is most of our camping is bought and paid for, just show up , relax and enjoy!

We have 2 six hundred round trips planned, one 500 mile round trip planned, one 1400 mile round trip planned, one 1300 mile round trip planned and 7 trips that are 2 hours or less from home planned. The mileage listed doesn't include the driving we will do when we get there. We might have to cross one of the big ones off the list this year, and maybe a few smaller trips. I hope it doesn't come to that.:(

Hey Marcy

Nice of you to make this type of post after you have convinced DW and I to drive from NH to MI just to camp with you and DH.

Let's see  Approximately 1500 miles getting 12 mpg equals 125 gallons of gas at $2.25 a gallon is $281.25 just for gas to get one of your banshees??????????  HMMMMMMMM  Have to think this one over.

LMAO Gene! You'd drive to CA "just" to camp with us  & have a Banshee :-();)  ... besides we are just a minor detour on your way to Branson :p

  Let's hope it stops at $ 2.25

Gas jumped 15 cents/gallon last week.  OUCH!  I have 11 nights booked so far (more planned).  Fortunately we have a lot of great cg's within an hour of home, so hopefully we'll get a bunch of those quick trips in, too.  I can't wait to get out there and camp.

Beer Belly

I can't see gas prices being a determining factor in our camping, finding a trustwothy Dog (2)/ Housesitter might be. We have a trip to Maine planned and am having a hard time finding someone to take on Frisco and his Meds.....a Vet is out of the question....my boys are more comfortable at home.

gas prices stink, but that's something I've never factored into my trips..why?? I don't know but the way I see it even with gas prices high it's still cheaper than staying in an overpriced hotel and eating 3 meals a day out..sheesh just for us to go to Fast food it's $20. plus its not as fun to hang out with friends and in a hotel I certainly can't sit by a fire :yikes:

Actually if the price of gas doesn't hit 3 bucks a gallon, I don't think it will stop me from going camping and taking a long trip.

We are currently sketching one out for MI, MO, AR and NC for the fall.

Reason, I have waited too many years to retire and be able to do some travelling.

Last years 11000 mile trip cost me $1808 for gas.  I figure that at todays prices I would have had to pay about $450 more for the gas.

Were the memories worth it, you bet, they were priceless.

Did you mean AK or AR? AK is Alaska and AR is Arkansas.

I changed my sig line to relfect that fact that I no longer use gasoline, I
use the more expensive diesel now:yikes: .

I hope the increase in fuel economy more than makes up for the price.

We only have one long trip planned and we will be there no matter the price of fuel. We do have quite a few local trips planned though
