replace your tires after 5 years. Check out the pics in the trailer tire album.

came home from the store today and noticed this. :yikes: Glad I made it home from Santa Cruz. I had already told Dan to put new tires on the "to Do" list as we are approaching 5 years in Oct.  my dad suggests buying 2 tires and replacing both on the same axel. I obviuosly have to do this before the San Mateo labor day trip, but I was hoping to wait on the other 2 after labor day but before Santa paula...ugh...something I wasn't planning to deal with right now :banghead:

You are soooooooooooooooo lucky something didn't blow on the big trip to Smithwoods......This is one thing we don't mess with we had to replace our TT tires after one year and that really sucked.....

Very serious situation indeed!
Are those retreaded tires or were they new at one time?
I don't think I have seen the tread separate from the casing like that before.

Glad you made it home safely :D

these are new from the factory when I bought the trailer. I will NEVER buy a retread everyone here including me hadn't noticed it before today could the heat from sitting do that? I'm glad it did that in my driveway and not while I was driving

after thinking about it I have put some miles on those tires ..been to WA., Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Parker Az. plus all the camping rallies and meet in the middles..

OC Campers

I am so glad they didn't blow on your way home from Santa Cruz.

We keep a couple of extra tires just in case.  Would you believe our hybrid takes the same size tire as the popup.  We had so much trouble finding tires for the popup that we bought 2 extra to carry with us just in case.  Now we have them for the hybrid.

Dee......
That is caused by your excessive need for .............

SPEED!!!!!
:yikes:

You were probably 1 or 2 miles away from having the tread on that tire come off entirely.

The older your tires get, the more prone they are to come apart at high speed. Most trailer tires are rated at 65MPH NEW. That rating deteriorates with age. If you have tires that are 4 years old on your trailer, you may want to consider keeping it under 60.

If you are like some of the people that post here and routinely tow at 70MPH (or like Dee.......75MPH :) ), you may want to consider new tires every 2-3 years.

Jim says trailer tires are not like regular car tires they are not rated like car tires and the guy at the place where we bought our new TT tires said trailer tires should be replaced every 2-3 years no matter what the milage due to tire break down of the rubber.  After seeing the ones we replaced on the TT after only one year I believe it....Didn't take pictures but the sidewalls had huge cracks and the tread was starting to separate  .......Needless to say we were not very happy.....Do you cover your tires?  We now cover ours at home and even when camping.......As stated before it sucks......There should be better laws when it comes to trailer tires.....

luckily I have regular size tires not PUp-up tires ST205/75R15 so easy to get.

and wavery I do avg 60 mph and don't go over 65 mph my hopes is even tho I'm going over the 55 mph if I'm under the Regular speed limit they'll give me a break..it's happened a couple of times.

so does putting tire covers on your wheels REALLY make a difference??

Dee4j

here's a question..Why do they make tires with such a low speed rating when the Majority of the US towing speeds are 65-75 mph?? I remember when I went to AZ it was 70 mph

It's kinda like all the other ratings on our vehicles. We can't pick & choose the ones that we would like to ignore. Just because our passenger car tires may be rated at 200MPH doesn't mean that we can ignore the State's posted speed limits. Those States that post 75MPH speed limits for trailers are not going to pay for our blown out tires either.:morning:

Just because we can do something doesn't always mean that we should......;)
