Got a good laugh today. Took the van in to get the oil changed at EZLube. Of course they said it needed the Transmission oil changed, cause it was "real bad" (it does need to be changed) Said he would give me $20 off the $119 price, I said "Ok but do you have the filter in stock?" "Oh no it doesn't need a filter, you only change those if its leaking " Haha oh really. You know April fools was yesterday... ha ha. What a joke.

These places crack me up, if you can't do the work correctly then don't offer the service....

The way that they change the trans fluid is to stick a hose down the dipstick tube, suck up as much ATF as they can, run it through a filtering system and dump it back into your transmission. If they are really good about it, they will start your engine and let it run for a few minutes and repeat the proceedure about 3 times.

It's better than nothing but it is better to pull the oil pan (can be a VERY messy job), change the filter, clean the pan then fill it with ATF......but wait.......that's just 1/2 of the fluid. The rest is stuck in your torque converter.....:yikes:.

Now, comes the tricky part.......
1. Pull the trans cooler return pipe off of the radiator. put the end of that pipe in a clear plastic one gallon container, with a line @ 1 quart.

2. Start the engine and let it idle until 1 qt of fluid is pumped into the container (about 10 seconds), shut off the engine.

3. Add 1 qt of fluid to the trans.

4. repeat # 2 & 3 until the fluid coming out of the pipe is the same color as the new fluid.

NOW!!!!! you have completed a transmission service with a complete fluid change.

I highly recommend that when you do this, use synthetic ATF. Mobile makes a good one, so do several other major brands. Amsoil is another good one. It's about $13 a qt but it may save you a transmission replacement in the long run.......let's see......$130 for synthetic ATF vs. $5000 for a new trans........HMMMMMMM.......tuff choice.

Make sure that you have about 12qts before you start. You may be able to return some but you don't want to be caught without enough to complete the job.

If you want to be a big sissy about it, bring it over to my place and I will help you with it........:sombraro:

BTW.....if that fluid is starting to get brown and/or smells burnt.....DO NOT tow that trailer until you get the trans serviced......IMHO, you may be over-stressing that van on a good day......towing with burnt ATF.....that's a bad day....

How did I know you would be the one to chime in on this??  Yes I know all about it.  Auto was my second concentration in college.  I know a bit about cars, thats why I laughed at the guy.  Tranny changes are messy, I won't do it myself.  We have a long time family friend that owns a tranny shop.  I will give them my money.  I took it there to see if they could fit me in today, but they coldn't and didn't have  the parts.  He checked it for me though and said it was ok for the trip.

Thanks wayne!

Cause you love it.  And it will come in handy for others who know less about cars then we do.  I can only imagine the money wasted by some who know NOTHING about cars.
I hate those quick change places, but I don't have time to do it myself.  I have caught them not changing the filter a couple times, and once they didn't put on a oil Filter, and then STARTED THE CAR!!!!  Good lord, what idiots.

There is a method to my madness of my business...my little tykes provide incredible write offs!  I am sure we would be paying through the nose had I not have this business!
