Has anyone called the CG to ask if chiggers have been a problem there?  It might be nice to know if that's what you're actually doing battle with ...  :D

Quote from: BootheBunchOkay....I don't know about you, but I am buying these medications, and using them on all of us (Riley included)!

"Topical Cortisone creams can be very helpful to reduce the itching. Chigger mites frequently lay eggs underneath the skin, and Lindane (Kwell), which is also used for head lice, can be very effective, as well as asking your healthcare provider for Permethrin (Elimite). These medications usually take care of the chiggers fairly quickly."

Boy, I'd sure be careful about putting anything on Riley -- remember, he can lick off just about anything.  If he's itching, my bet is that he's got fleas, not chiggers (if that's what's got everyone itching).  Brandy's just fine -- even though she was filthy coming home.  Had her goomed yesterday, and the groomer didn't report anything unusual on her.

After scratching open my bites & letting them scab over they're much better -- ugly, but no itch.  I'm sure mine are NOT chiggers -- just nasty ol' mosquitos.  Remember, most everyone except Winn and me went to the beach.  Winn wasn't anywhere where chiggers live, if I'm reading everything right.  Might just be a bad case of flea bites for most of you & mosquito bites for the 2 of us.  You all sat on the sand, right?  And Lori & Griffin spent most of the time in the water, right?  Again, I'd sure call the CG before taking apart any trailers.  It's hard to kill something if you don't know what you're trying to kill.  Maybe a flea bomb is all that's needed.

As far as I'm concerned, camping there in cooler weather would take care of anything that likes to chew on us.  We hit the CG at a particularly "explosive" time with the hot weather.  It's a nice place, but maybe in March or April, before everything hatches & the weather gets hot.

I'm up for camping in Oceanside/Guajome in September.

Have fun!  Send pictures!

From my experience, fleabites don't look like what is on Brandon.  His bites look exactly like the chigger pics.  Also, Wayne got lots of bites....and he didn't go to the beach...so, the beach is out as a possibility.

Bran is in real pain now.  So, I went to our 24 hour this morning and talked to the pharmacist.  She recommended the 12-Hour Cortaid, which can be put on 4 times a day.  And, she said to wait a half hour after applying...then put on Vaseline.  The Vaseline is to suffocate any chiggers left AND their eggs (they can supposedly lay eggs under the skin!).  She also recommended Chiggerex that can be applied as often as needed.  She said Vaseline will work just as well as Kwell.

Riley seems okay.  We did bathe him, and we bathed him the day we went camping.  I read that dog shampoo keeps chiggers away, so maybe that is why the dogs seem okay!  He is getting groomed tomorrow anyway, so I think he'll be fine.  And, me and the girls seem fine....

Ack!  And, yes, I think someone needs to call the campsite!

Here's a picture of what chigger bites look like -- not the exaggerated pictures that are on other sites.  Is that what you all have?

That is definitely NOT what I have...mine are like an inch to 1 1/2 in. diameter with a hole in the middle.  Maybe it IS just the worlds worse case of mosquitos or fleas or whatever.  GOOD IDEA to call the campground Laura!  Today is my first day of no itching whatsoever and most of my bites are fading now.

Quote from: BootheBunchYes...I was told some type of antiseptic was to be rubbed on the bites, to kill any leftover chiggers--Bran has used hydrogen peroxide. We are putting cortisoid on his bites, and he feels relief. If it continues, he wants calamine lotion or something.

And, make sure you are all washing the camping clothes in HOT water!

BTW, Bran has said he is NOT camping there again, no matter what the weather! He is not a happy camper.
Chiggers, Smiggers, come camping with us.

Brian and I looked for the phone # before we went camping and couldn't find a number to the park. If someone one else has it I would be happy to call and talk to them. Brian's bites are getting better and so are Ashlee's. Definately NOT mosquito bites!

Just talked to John at the ranger station in Guajome park.  I told him what was going on and he mentioned mosquitos at first and later thought it could be sand fleas. He has not known of a problem with chiggers in the park but he did mention he has seen sand fleas before but has not heard of any other problems lately. He took down our site numbers and is going to walk over and investigate. He also said they spray on a regular basis. Wish we could of gotten an answer to what it was. Atleast we brought it to their attention and they know there is a problem.

Estone

Hi everyone,

I came to visit and was there, oh, what, two hours???  Well, I am in such pain I almost can't stand it.  I have TONS of bites.  They don't look like what's on the web page though.  They are circular, red with a darker red spot in the very middle.  The itching is horrendous.  Can you believe it???  I didn't go to the beach where everyone else went, I just sat there and  visited.  I only have them on the legs.  No arms, face, etc.  I even thought about going to the Dr. today.  They're worse today than before.

Imagine.............

Thanks for calling Kristi!  This is the most insane thing ever!!!

This is just to weird. Mine are finally settling down and Carolyn's are getting worse. She thinks that they may even be new bites. I just can't see how that's possible though. I washed every stitch of clothes & bedding, the very next day. Even had the carpets shampooed (just in case).

I thought that they were fleas at first.....now I don't know what they are.
