Mine was a 59 Ford Fairlane 500 4 door bought in 1975. What a tank. I got it from my grandmother in the NW Arkansas mountains for $250.00. We drove up from Waco, Tx to pick it up. My cousin said the car had been sitting for about 6 months. Checked all the fluids, something was not quite right here. The oil was red. When I asked my cousin what had happened and she said she filled the car with oil......I asked what with, she showed me the cans. She had filled it with Dextron automatic transmission fluid! Needless to say we had to drain it out and put new oil and a filter on. It was an ugly white color that turned almost a rusty brown color due to it always parked under the trees. What a nice 1st car my Dad thought. I was thinking there is now way I am driving that piece of crap to school! Image was the in thing then as it is now you know. It looked like a P.O.S. and it smelled the same inside. You know, that old material funk that just never seems to go away. Anyways, we started home. The first 35 miles is nothing but mountains on hwy 23. Dad stopped about halfway through the mountains and said he is having to pump the brakes to get the car to slow down. What fun for mom and me behind him trying to manuever that land shark around the sharp curves and up and down the hills. It never smoked once to my amazement. Just the brakes were smoking! :yikes: We had pretty much an uneventfull  trip the rest of the 500 miles home with the exception of the last 3 miles. Dad pulled over on I35 and said there is an awfull noise coming from the car and and it started vibrating pretty bad. He got back in the car and drove the 3 miles home, whick took about 15 minutes. He parked that car in the driveway and he could have never been prouder, to see his last child get their 1st car. I was ashamed because it dropped the property value of our neighborhood the moment it finally made the last kerplunk in the driveway. We had my brother pull the car the our High Schools automechanics shop which he an I were a part of. Pulled the tranny out and the darn torque converter we only held to the flywheel with one last bolt. We replaced the flywheel and converer and off to school I was a driving. OMG, I cannot drive this thing. The look of fear struck everyone as I pulled into the parking lot of the school. Everyone was affraid I was going to crash that beast into their nice cars. I made it one week with that car and I could not take it any longer. I went to my dad and told him "that car is just not me". He said he would like to have it for his work car if I get another. I bought a 1969 Z28 the next weekend for $1000! Man what a dream car. I was now in heaven. Tha ladies liked it as well. Now back to my dad. He took that old car and cleaned it up. Got a new royal blue metalic paint job, reupholstered interior, and some baby moons on it. I could not believe the transformation. He drove the car for another 7 years to work with just changing the oil and putting on new tires. That car turned out to be one of the most dependable cars we have ever had. Just thought I would share my story and you enjoyed it.

Great story, Spicyville!

My very first car was a 1931 Chevrolet coupe. It was my grandpa's and when he passed on it was passed down to me. I had it for my last year in high school. You could tell, too ... my grades declined with the "extra activities" that old car got me into!

My first car was a 1997 Honda Accord.  I got it as a college graduation / flight attendant training graduation present.  I drove that car all over the U.S.!  It took me to Texas, back to Georgia, to Utah, back again to Georgia.  I had my first kiss with my future husband in that car.  We brought home our baby in that car.  We drove it for 12 years, put 231,000 miles on it, and sold it LAST WEEK to a fresh-faced college freshman.  Now it's her first car!

Hey all!

While right now I'm on the 42nd car in my life (NOT a typo!) my first car was a 1977 Ford E-150 Chateau van that my parents bought new in 1977 when I was just five years old.  Lots of memories in that van - starting with that we have a tradition in my family that we go out for ice cream when we get a new car.  Well the van was literally five minutes old on the way home from the dealer and we stopped for ice cream.  Long story short, I spilled my vanilla shake ALLLLL over the new van lol.  The next year we brought my sister home from the hospital when she was born in 1978.  When I turned 16, Dad and I turned the van into a camper - bed, potty, etc.  The van went to CA and back twice and many many adventures in between.  I had that van until 2002 when the entire front suspension rotted off.  The ol' 300 straight six still ran like new!  That is when I bought my first camper since I no longer had the van to camp in.

Now should I start another post on how many campers you've had??  Check out my profile below....

Geeeeeeee!!!! That was a non-starter..... I take it no one is interested in this concept......I'm hurt... :%

It is kind of interesting that Studebaker had this long hood, short trunk concept of a semi-sports car - to some was a smashing hit but to others another "ho-hum". Yet when Ford came out with something along the same line, their Mustang, it was an overwhelming success. Did Studebaker lay the ground work for Ford? Or had the Studebker name become tarnished?

WWII did some car makers in ... like Hudson and Packard. Before the war they were very poipular. During the war they made aircraft engines and such but could not make the transition back into civilian production. Same for Nash - I remember when cars were in sharp demand years right after the war and our neighbor got a new air conditioned Nash and EVERYONE wanted to ride in the thing in the summer! The neighbor on the other side of us drove a DeSoto and I thought that was a super looking car. All bit the dust.

1979 Chevy LUV pickup. It was my grandfather's, so it had a lot of sentimental value. But I was under it more than I was in it.
