Actually, it's more likely to be cold. October is a transitional month. Could be hot....could be cold. More than likely cold.

Ed, for you it would be before Mojave Narrows.  Not by alot, but it would be a shorter drive for you.

I made some calls today and here is what I've come up with:

Calico Campground is about 3 or so miles from the fwy and is located on the far side the the ghost town parking lot and down the hill from the Cemetery.  The price for the events weekend is $138 and includes:  admission to the town, Mystery Shack and mine.  This price is the same whether you have 2 people per site or 6.  There are no group discounts on event weekends and reservations for event weekends are made 90 days in advance.

KOA is located next to the fwy and about 3 miles from the ghost town.  There is fwy noise and each site is separated by shrubs/bushes (I guess to help absorb some noise.)  The noise didn't bother me and DH didn't say much about it either.  The KOA is a clean campground and is well taken care of.  There is a building in the back of the campground that have Unisex bathrooms on 1 side and Unisex showers on the other.   In the front of the campground there is another set of bathrooms and these are sex dedicated ( I believe they have 2 or 3 showers).  There are also many Unisex showers located here.  The bathrooms are clean but are in need of updating.

The price for the weekend at the KOA is $72 Full hookups & $69 Water/Electric NO Sewer.   They have a whole $1 discount coupon for the ghost town and a FREE shuttle to and from the town.   If we want to go this route, we should make reservations after the 1st of 2008.

I hope I've answered most of your questions.

Thanks Brian, if you do the trip there next year we could make it for that. The one this year is just too long a drive with the kids......

Now you are in my neck of the woods.(My computer has been down for over a week sure glad to be back)....Oct. can be hot but most likely it'll be on the cool side and as far as the wind?  That's anyones guess......With that being said we love the month of Oct......It sure would be nice not to drive very far......The campground at Calico is very small and the people working the event call early to get the hook up sites so we sure would have to act fast the over fill area is a dirt parking lot........Yuck.....I have never been to the KOA so Kim would have to fill us in on that campground......carol

Carol, funny that you mentioned camping in that dirt lot.  To me, it's the Cemetery parking lot.  When we visited Calico, Matt wanted to see the Cemetery.  As we drove up to the lot, I found it odd that there was one, lone trailer dry camping there.   You wouldn't find me camping that close to a Cemetery.

HMMMMMMMMM!!! Could make for an interesting Halloween :-()  :yikes:  :Z

kimrb266

Waverly - BTW - They also have dry sites and I saw a PUP set up in one but I'm not sure how far they'd be to the rest of the group.

Well come to think of it Kim it is by the cemtery and it could make for a very fun Halloween campout........Or Not........

Ack!
I've driven past Calico weekly for about 10 years for work. It's exactly one hour after you get to the top of the Summit on the 15. Exit the 15 at Fort Irwin Rd. Turn left (dangerous left) go 2 miles, right 1 mile. can't miss it. I haven't camped out here for pleasure, I'm not sure I could handle it after the times I've slept in the car out here.
The end of october will be cool with a stiff breeze kicking up in the afternoon. Kids will probably need a sweatshirt under their costume at night. I've never seen the KOA.  There is also a place a few minutes away called Rainbow Basin which is a great fossil place- Dirt road leads to a (dry? BLM?)  campground.
The NASA Deep Space antennas are an hour down Ft. Irwin Rd. I know it's a no brainer to set up a tour on weekdays, I'm not so sure about weekends. If there is interest, I can look into it. If someone twists my arm and gets me on the I-15 to do this rally, I'll lead the tour.  (Keep in mind the brain damage is pretty bad. I haven't been to Vegas since '93, but I haven't been made to go out there yet this year, so by next year there might be a chance...)
Wasn't there a newspaper article the other day about getting living folks (or more accurately, their money) into cemetaries? If we like camping in one, we can try Forest Lawn- much closer, more temperate and just as spooky no? :)

Mmmmmm.....if I'm not mistaken there are areas around Calico (or close by) that a person can ride their dirt toys.........i think we are in for this one.

Kim, slap on that Wagonmaster hat on and let's get this thing going!!!!
