When we were there (at the KOA), there were LOTS of toyhaulers witht their quads and dirt bikes.  They would park anywhere open and enjoy for the day.

If we go to Calico for the next Halloween Rally, I think it should be a the KOA because we can reserve our spots way ahead of time and not have to worry about getting any or enough spots for the group.

We have plenty of time to decide and ponder other suggestions.  I just thought it might be fun with the towns activities close by.

I'm with you Lisa, I don't like camping in the desert because it's so brown, dry and dreary looking  but I was surprised how much I enjoyed myself on this trip.  The KOA isn't the Marriott by any means but it is a clean place to camp and they have hook ups.  You know the group has fun no matter where they go.

Quote from: kimrb266Carol, funny that you mentioned camping in that dirt lot.  To me, it's the Cemetery parking lot.  When we visited Calico, Matt wanted to see the Cemetery.  As we drove up to the lot, I found it odd that there was one, lone trailer dry camping there.   You wouldn't find me camping that close to a Cemetery.

Lisa, your idea of of roughing it is having to carry your own suitcase into the Hilton.  You need to get out there and get your hands dirty and have some fun!

I HAVE AN IDEA !!!!!   Let's have a contest.  Everyone throws in say.... $10.00 into a pot.  For one night, everyone that enters the contest has to sleep in the Cemetary, next to a grave.  But you can't sleep next to someone else, you have to be alone.  Of course the people that are not in the contest have the right to use scare tactics throughout the night to make things interesting.  Whoever can last until the sun comes up the next morning wins the pot. If multiple people make it, they split the pot.  If everyone makes it then you pretty much wasted a night you could have been in your nice cozy camper.

Can I use my air mattress? :p

Not to butt in I dont belong to your group but I have camped at the KOA three years in a row when we go to the civil war reinactment at calico with the boy scouts.  The KOA is the better choice  the pool will be closed and you will have some freeway noise but the camp is clean nice sites and for off roaders you can ride your atv's or bikes from camp to your trails.  In calico camp its very cramped tight spaces with hazards for backing your trailors and too few restrooms for the size of the camp. KOA will cost a bit more but it's been our base camp the last three years.  When you go to calico they will let you drive thru the camps so anyone taking a drive out their can check it out.  They have a nice dry lake bed between the KOA and calico where you can just pull onto and dry camp.  We go there to shoot rocket on sunday before we leave for home.

you're not butting in...thanks for the info..KOA's have never been on my list unless there isn't a better option, which sounds like maybe it is in this case.

Kristi and I went on a road trip to Vegas this weekend and drove right past the KOA.  It looked like a nice clean CG.  Not like a few other KOA's we have seen. The fact that we can ride the quads right from the CG out onto the trails is a HUGE plus for us.

"Roughing it" to me is being without my Tivo!!  So, surrounded by dirt is in one of my worst nightmares!  :yikes:

But, being also surrounded by friends and loved ones will help alleviate that angst....I will just have to find some!   ;)

I will sign Brandon up for that cemetary sleepover!   :D

Lisa: if nothing else, you'll know that you'll at least have your utilities and campfire. There are no firepits at this campground so I'll have to check to see if fires are allowed.

If the KOA is the location is chosen for the 2008 Halloween Rally, we'll have to see how many want full hook ups or partial. If anyone wants no hookups (Waverly), they won't be located within the group.

Hey!!!! in the middle of the stinking desert, hook-ups might be OK (as long as it's not $20 a day extra).....:sombraro:

Besides.........Carolyn will probably want to leave the lights on all night, if I'm gonna be sleeping in the cemetary..... :p
