This morning Jason said "I wish we went camping more."  We got back from a three week trip less than two weeks ago, and had a nine day trip just two weeks before that.

But who am I to deny the poor lad.  Melissa has Girl Scouts, soccer, and a birthday party so it will be a boys' weekend for Jason and me.

We're in site 12.  We'll bring sourdough pancakes to the breakfast potluck.  Maybe something in the dutch oven for dinner.

what about the fire..they are evacuating green valley lake, that's not that far from dogwood


9:00 PM Saturday: Fire is 13,829+ acres and is one half mile from Green Valley Lake. The fire has destroyed Hanna Flats campground. It is 5% contained.

Hwy 18 remains closed.

9:00 AM Saturday: Fire is at 4,000 acres.
Resources on Scene--22 hand crews, 27 engines, 4 helicopters, 6 fixed winged and 2 helitamkers, and 15 watertenders.

Highway closures--Hwy 18 is closed from Snow Valley Ski Area to Big Bear Dam.

Drivers may not access Big Bear from Hwy 18 or from Hwy 330 in San Bernardino, but Hwy 18 is open from Apple Valley (the high desert). Drivers may also access Big Bear via Hwy 38 from I-10 in Redlands, it's a beautiful drive.

Evacuations--Holcomb Valley, Fawnskin, Green Valley Lake, Crab Flats campground, Camp Whittle, Big Pine Flat, Ironwood, Hanna Flat Campgrounds, Yellow Post campsites in the area, and Butler Peak Lookout.

Forest Road Closures--2N13, both ends of 3N14, 4N16, 3N16 at Crab Flats, Grays Peak Trailhead

The fire is north of Big Bear Lake.

This is the same scenario that we had when we went to Casitas a few weeks ago. That fire was 800,000 acres and still burning. The wind was blowing opposite of our location and we had no hint that there was a fire anywhere.

Now, having said that, if that thing is still burning and we get a wind shift, things could get smoky. I'm not interested in that either. We'll just have to do a day-by-day watch and make a decision a day or 2 before we leave.

For now, I see no reason for concern. The fire is a long ways away and the wind is blowing the smoke toward Nevada.

Too bad about another big fire up there.  Hope it gets under control soon.

Meanwhile I'll be Nero...

I'm guessing that complete campfire and charcoal restrictions will be in place for next weekend.  Meaning no dutch oven cooking.

Just came across this thread yesterday, weve had site 21 reserved since May and I see this morning on inciweb.org that the H.S. is being used as a evacuation center, lets hope they it get under control.
