gsm x2That " Mommy Death Grip"  was nothing compared to the one I laid on him when we went on the kiddie ferris wheel at the fair.  Mind you, the " kiddie"  ferris wheel consisted of an open-air bench with a metal floor board and two metal bars going across your lap.  That s was it! [:o]  I was holding him tighter than Dave holds on to our checkbook!   Griffin, of course, was just as casual and nonplussed by the whole thing as he could possibly be!  [&:]  We re going back to the fair tonight, but we ll have a go in the big ferris wheel where you re completely enclosed in a nice cage!

The surfing picture was taken only 5 feet from shore and was for " photo op"  purposes only.  Rest assured that when I do actually teach him how to surf, he ll most definitely have his life vest on.  We waited too long and fought too hard for him to feed him to the fishes now! [;)]  But thank you, Scott, for reminding us all how extra careful and saftey-minded we need to be when our children are around water.  You clearly deserved and continue to live up to the award you received this year![:)]  I hope this allows you to breathe a little easier and to go back to being just plain  ol gsm x2,--at least where Griffy and surfing are concerned!  Feeling much better.  Guess I spent too many years lifeguarding in Long Beach to be able to look the other way when I see infants around water.  Here s a little known fact about kids around water that I WISH would be on the headlines of every children s magazine.  Hmm, maybe I should write it.

For quite a long time after children learn to walk, they get to their feet by putting their hands in front of them and walking their feet to their hands before standing up.  What this means around water if the water is deeper than their arms are long, they cannot stand up...and in no uncertain terms will drown if someone isn t there to assist them.  In real life, the " danger zone"  is when the child is about crotch deep in water.  They fall, they float on the surface face down until they drown.  Craziest part---as they try to touch the ground and move their feet forward, they kind of look like they are swimming.  Can t count the number of times I ve seen parents standing right next to the baby laughing " at baby swimming."   They are quite surprised to have a lifeguard swoop in and return a sputtering, frightened, and often crying baby to them.

BTW--I think Griff is just past the age, so as long as he isn t in deeper than his mouth, he should still be able to get onto his feet.

Being the over-protective, hovering mother that I am, I wouldn t even let him get that deep.  Knees and below only!

Thanks for sharing that info.  As I read it, it seems only common sense.  I can still see how when Griffin was learning to walk, he used to inchworm his way into a standing position exactly as you described, and yet, the realization of how that translates in water never occurred to me.  The biggest thing to remember is that children drown without a sound., and there is no such thing as being too careful.

CottonwooderScott, you are so right.  I took Matt to our neighborhood pool a few weeks ago and the baby pool is only 1 1/2 feet deep.  The water is up to Matts tummy.  He slipped and fell.  If I hadn t been paying attention, he would of drowned.  He flipped to his stomach but couldn t figure out that if he just put his feet down and stood up he would of been fine.  He had is face in the water the entire time and never stood up on his own.  It is so frightening to watch.   I can see why so many accidents occure.  If you look away for a second, disaster can strike.  Please everyone watch your children as close as you can in the water and never look away from them.

Pinning a Gold Star of Water Safety on Jacqui for paying attention and saving Matt s life.  It is amazing to watch; must be frightening to go through.

CottonwooderThanks for the info Scott, while it seems like common sense, people don t think, like leaving your kid in the car when its 95 @%*@# degrees outside!!!!
(sorry ANOTHER child died in Irvine today. I just don t understand people, a child is the most precious gift anyone can have and some people just need to be slapped upside the head!! [:@][:@][:@] )

Kara started lessons with the most awesome teacher since before she was two. (she taught Kevin too) she has been " pool safe"  since she was almost 3 . meaning if she fell in she can swim, I put her in for 3 sessions again this year as a refresher she s a good swimmer but I still can t take my eye of her for a second.

 CottonwooderHi all,
I m still alive, just not here much.  Last few weeks have been unusually busy for us.  We re actually camping this weekend for the first time since Gold Rush Rally nearly two months ago, but I m home at the moment to get some work done and back to a client.  (We re at Casitas, so close enough to home to do this.)

When things calm down, I ll update the list for Far West and book more sites, if necessary.  Bye for now! [:)]

 GuestKim and Richard,

We would love to have you join us.  If you go to www.sccampers.org then to future trips, you will find the information on the Thanksgiving Rally.  ~Patricia~ promises to get some more sites and get this organized.  I have complete faith in my small but powerful friend, so expect to hear from her in a few days.

Sorry it took a day to respond to your request.  She is camping; I missed the post.

Oh gosh, TOS, am only just now reading this, and didn t know about it.  Yes, try submitting it to magazines.  For now, I m sending this around to my online mom s group, with a request for them to forward it to every mom of a toddler they know.  Heck, with the way the Web is, that method may reach more mothers than a parenting magazine, LOL!

(Am combing through all recent posts as I update the list and get going with the rally.)

I will continue to update this list.  Lori, are you definite yet?  Please let me know when we may need to give your site to someone else.  Now, let me call Far West...

 UPDATE[ul]
  • We got the four more sites, but not specific numbers, because sometimes they have to juggle sites around to accommodate bigger rigs, and Cedar is for the big ones.  However, we definitely have the sites already listed above.  (I explained that being PUs, we ll need as close access to the bathroom as possible.)

  •
  • The deposit is now $72, and is NOT added to the $18 rate, it s part of it.  (It didn t sound right to me that we save $5 with the Group rate, yet pay more than $5 deposit.)

  •
  • I ll pay the deposit ahead of time.  You all pay me, then I will give them one single check to cover the entire amount.  They don t want individuals paying them.

  •
  • The Clubhouse was fully booked.  Bummer.  The area between #7 and #8 is nice and big for our potluck(s), though!

GuestWere still going so please dont sell our site.  lol
